This is a little hornbeam that really has taken shape this year. I lost all the before pictures at BT but can show people what it looks like today.

Tree is 7 inches tall with a 1.75 inch trunk. The pot is dark green by Jim Barrett

Thanks, Al

The netsuke is a Japanese lady with a stringed instrument in a bag.

That's a happy little hornbeam - very nice tree, Al. And nice display.

Can you explain the display for those of us unschooled in that visual language. I'd appreciate it.

Will

Like Taiko drummers, many groups of muscians gather to play outdoors. This netsuki represents a lady that would belong to such a group. She may be waiting for her bandmates under the shade of the tree with the chirping of the birds nearby.

I have many netsuki in my collection. This one is playfull and not so serious.

Very nice traditional display. I wish I could see the scroll a bit closer. That looks like a Korean hornbeam, yes? Very nice tree! Your netsuke appears to be a modern Chinese piece. The musical instrument she is carrying is (I think) a pipa, or liuqin (a smaller pipa), both are Chinese musical instruments.

A freshly potted shohin hornbeam....

I will get some pictures together. I shop Ebay as well as antique stores. I also have two friends that are estate brokers that sell off estates for people that die. I have bought two large carved wood pieces that way as well as an antique Chinese bonsai stand.

Cheers, Al
