Pretty Fly for a Bonsai Guy
This is the direction I’m leaning...but it is a tough one.On the other hand, it is cool to see it also in this way where proportions are more exaggerated using a smaller pot.

I think of shohin pots being 'one-hand' size or more specifically dimensions of 4" to 6". There are absolutely fabulous pots made in that size range that you don't have yet. It looks like you might be able to squeeze this guy into such a pot. So I think this is what you ought to do. If it doesn't work out, back to this pot and grow it up.Currently it’s kinda stuck in between, with a too-big pot for a too-short tree. I love the pot, so I’m tempted to let the tree grow bigger.
Ha! That’s what I keep telling my wife...”but I didn’t have a pot exactly like that one.”?There are absolutely fabulous pots made in that size range that you don't have yet.
Not really, I’ve just been working it slowly into a smaller pot every couple years, and stalled out on this one because I like the pot. I do believe I will be able to get it into a pot that is the “right” scale for the tree and for a Shohin display in the next repot...assuming I can find just the right pot. It's a lovely tree but the pot does make it look small. I may have missed it, but why are you using this size container? Is there a root issue that prevents a shallower container?
Us SoB’s have a running inside joke about “Kirbying” a tree into a pot. John Kirby is very good at stuffing Sumo Shohin into tiny pots. Tridents have such strong and resilient root systems that they “Kirby” very well. Not really, I’ve just been working it slowly into a smaller pot every couple years, and stalled out on this one because I like the pot. This one would be close, with a shoehorn and a little luck.

Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! May just give it a squeeze next March.Us SoB’s have a running inside joke about “Kirbying” a tree into a pot. Matty O can fix you up with any number of incredible pots for your tree.
But, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know!
Ahhh yes, one of the many reasons I now have my Matty O boxes sent to my work address??Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! May just give it a squeeze next March.
But the rest, yes. Even my wife knows what a box from Matty O means (in the rare case she finds one before I unpack it and destroy the evidence, and hide the new pot among all the others...) ?
For reference: a “Kirbyed” Shohin trident:Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! May just give it a squeeze next March.

omg. the thought has crossed my mind many times...lol, and then I can't resist temptation and say "you have to check this pot out honey, it's sweeeeet". I keep waiting on her to get mad when I spend money on pots, but she never does. She's a keeper She even takes my trees off of the benches if it gets too windy and I'm not there!Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! If this tree is to look in scale in the correct pot, it will have to be ground layered. That upper picture is not going to fit in the appropriate pot the way it is.Not really, I’ve just been working it slowly into a smaller pot every couple years, and stalled out on this one because I like the pot. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who destroys the evidence of my bonsai related purchases before the wife gets home.Actually I hadn’t the term “Kirbying”...was thinking more like Al Bundying! May just give it a squeeze next March.

I throw the boxes in the big dumpster at work......Glad to hear I'm not the only one who destroys the evidence of my bonsai related purchases before the wife gets home.
