I had one hundred dollars of holiday gift money to spend, so I headed to my favorite landscape nursery in Solvang, CA. I bought eight trees including: flowering quince, a mystery tree, two pomiegranites, a redwood and an oak. I'll post them individually as I get them cleaned up. But I was curious what you thought.

Which one do you think has the most potential?

I like the trunk and nebari on the Juniper, the trunk on the oak looks decent too, and the boxwood. Could you take some close up pictures of the buds and the bark on the mystey plant? That might help us identify it. The other option just to wait till spring!! :)

can't too much on most of them but I really like the base on the juniper(?) and the boxwood.... the oak look like it might have a decent base

Here is a close up of the mystery tree/shrub. It was among a bunch of quince but I'm not so sure that this is a quince. The branches look a little like liquid amber. THis is a photo of the tree as purchased. There are a lot of dead starts that I need to clean up.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I like the oak! Looks like someone had a fun day rooting around in the nursery.:)

If I had to bet, I'd say your mystery tree is a Forsythia, rare to bonsai because they sucker so profusely. I have seen a few nice one though, and the early spring flowers are hard to beat. Check this one out http://www.thegrowinggrounds.com/transplant/transplant.htm

That juniper does have a nice base, but it looks like a "blue rug" variety, which is a problem if your trying to style it in anything other than cascade. Note the branch pattern, sub-branches predominately come out of the top of the branches and fall over the side. Wierd for bonsai, but hopefully you can do something nice with it. You can really tighten up the foliage on these (hack it with shears, step on it, etc.) if kept in full sun. I have one beside my driveway, and the foliage that occasionally get run over by a car is amazingly dense and healthy looking.
