Walking along I spotted little tuft of mountain laurel..we have laurel everywhere but usually ,although highly charactered, they are never quite what i want to pull..maybe because the growth habit is always toward the tips reaching for light and I want something that already has some low growth for under my chop?lack of patience for taking the top one year and coming back following? Either way here is one that was cut because it was on edge of walkway..and its now got bushy growth to play with...i like it

And then on my way out i spotted this cool lil maple that also was hardcut at one point probably just to keep back from trail..YOINK

Now i have 3 maples of this girth and i like them all a ton

Would have felt better if was in spring or even later in year but lets give a shot..took them because didnt know if id find them again..soil was loose and they came right out with little disturbance, didnt have tools so i used a stick to work the roots out and with some gentle tugging we were good to go..i dont always bare hand them but noone can say you cant, ive done it plenty times when sporatically finding something you just have to have lol

Its back is bare and reaching for the one side of tree due to how it was growing when i found it,im sure being out of that doppled canopy will allow some balance to start pushing

I love these little 5.5 /6inch azalea pots...cant find them anywhere right now I'm upset this is my last one haha

The larger azalea pots are great too. "Half pots" have suited great for me this year for my maple finds

Cant wait til this ones growth gets in line

My maples have found their fit in these halfpots and i love it..in time they can be worked down shallower but i find this depth pot to be really versatile

It lacks taper but I think that can be worked on.
My little stubby guy had very little taper but with a little ramification beginning ,the canopy bushed nicely over that ugly hard cut

Nice trees. Maybe some bottom heat over the winter would ensure their survival? Like a de-icing cable in some sand to keep the frost off the roots? I’ve never tried myself but I hear it works wonders. I also am not sure if you need to add another thermostat to them to control the temp or if they would work out of the box.

Thank you! And Im glad you suggested this...i am mervous with winter coming because in the past when i lived with my dad we had a nice porchspace that was nice for winter because it was still colder but protected from elements..now im in a townhome with my gf and kid so i cant bring 20+ trees inside...i have a friend into the hobby and he has more space as he is on his own..thinking on convincing him to store my collection for winter...was literally thinking up a post to ask this very question

You are in zone 7? No permanent frost?
I would say, just wait for the first frost to hit it. THen place it in a shed. Should be fine.
