Should I do anything with this Contorta v. Murrayana - Lodgepole Pine?

I live in Piedmont, CA 94610.

I think the roots are a bit exposed, so I covered them with soil. I removed all the completely dead pines. I'm really uncertain as to if I should be trimming at all, since it's such a small pine.

I would let this grow out as vigorously and strong as possible. You might even consider planting in the ground in the spring. The health of the tree should always come first so let this guy get healthy and strong. Let the candles fully elongate, and let the tree grow as strong as it can. Foliage feeds the root system and pines live and die by their roots. Letting it grow out will speed the development of the trunk as well.

This guys got a long way to go but you gotta start somewhere, right?

Best,
Dan

Although I agree that this should be let to grow, you could put a nice twisting and wiring on it at this stage I bet. The Pom Pom on top could then run wild for a few years as sacrifice growth.
