I have 10 L. laricina and 16 L. kaempferi here in Asheville NC and there is one in the arboretum collection that has been grown here since the mid-1970s. We think it is our cold winters and cool nights that allow them to grow here. How far south in the US do you think you can safely grow a larch? I bought a Tamarack larch from Facebook auctions last year and it seems to struggle. It is 8” tall and very sparse. The foliage is extremely fragile and seems to wilt easily. It is currently very wilted and I’m wondering if that’s from all the rain we got in the last week. We had about 2 1/2” over 3-4 days. The picture below is from a month ago.
I’m in St. Louis, MO. I keep it in the shade and make sure it doesn’t dry out for long. I’m wondering if I need to sell it to someone up north and give up trying to grow the species. I’d like to know how far south anyone is able to grow them successfully. Any advice is appreciated.
ok, I'll play. A larch in my set:

Hi. Second one is realy promising.you let it grow or style up?
What do you do with them in the heat of the summer? Do you keep them shaded?I have 10 L. laricina and 16 L. kaempferi here in Asheville NC and there is one in the arboretum collection that has been grown here since the mid-1970s. Yes. I lost a couple of J. larch a couple of years ago when I left them in the sun during an August heat wave. Both my American and Japanese larch now get morning sun until about 1PM and I keep them on the wet side but in very well drained mix. About mid-July I move them to dappled shade all day. What do you do with them in the heat of the summer? Do you keep them shaded?
Solid!Apparently, my "pine tree" is a larch. My daughter received one of those seedling/starter trees at an end of 1st-grade fair thingy, so we threw it in this random pot that had a dead houseplant in it. It's been in said pot for about 5-6 weeks at the time of these pictures (two days ago). Probably going to repot it next sping... eventually it will be a cascade.
Wow to both of those.European Larch RoR and a J. Larch Forest.
Beautiful. But HOW do you move that . . . ? The roads here in NYC would bounce that thing off the stone even if it was wired down.Larch may be my favorite. Here is my Larch forest from the recent show in Grand Rapids, MI
