Today I separetad this siberian elm air layer I started this spring. It turned out pretty cool, it has roots all around.
I couldn't decide how to train it yet. I can go for a moyogi style using the branch on the right as new leader the one on the left as the first branch. Or cut the top off in the spring because these guys can bud from the cut which makes them perfect hokidachi subjects.
What do you think fellow nuts?

Yeah you have a nice base to start with there! I love Siberian elm as a species.

I would chop it here next spring and just regrow new branches instead of working with the sub par branching you have to work with now.5D0A5F44-79BF-4C02-B4C3-8CDC67E97211.jpeg

Great tree!
I too love Siberian Elm.I was drawn to them last season as I sewn about 400 seedlings and every last one of them had amazing and beautiful color.

I also have an air-layer here I am fattening up.
The bole of the tree is getting big and should be very nice next Autumn.4759F3D8-220A-4152-9DB9-E5E2C0580C10.jpeg4B6C1F1A-C49D-46BB-923E-98AFC5250601.jpegC7EFFEFD-DA48-4D93-8A69-ACD94E307A17.jpegB4628D37-BB6C-432E-A75F-8030A9A8F734.jpeg784F22C5-0511-4F8A-94C9-508C65AB172D.jpeg1A54E7CD-13F4-4E3B-969F-BC3295EE0AB1.jpegFDFEEBF6-E999-46AE-BCEE-26FE8334F711.jpeg248ABCD8-EC98-41A4-BFED-9570A42C0E47.jpegA8C41463-31E9-4E14-8108-6ADFBF6EA38E.jpeg8BC92276-ADD7-4ABA-B72E-8A789D2B48BF.jpeg

I might add the seed is incredible……stores for like 15 years and germinates in 2 days with only a few drops of water……No pre-treatment!!!
It don’t get no better than that😆

Thanks for the advice! I am leaning towards this too. Always wanted a small broom.
Had a nice siberian elm air layer few years ago. Wanted to train to a broom too. The base was superb but I set the angle of the branches too far down and when realized this they were too stiff to change. Chopped it again but this time only one half of the cut budded and the other part died back all the way to the roots.

Yes that is a risk with Siberian elm but what can I say I like to roll the dice sometimes 😂

would make a great little broom if it cooperates.

I’ve found that they will throw a whole ring of buds at he site of flat cuts great for broom like trees.
Out of curiosity, when did you start it in the spring? After leaves hardened off?

Yes, this happened for the first time but second time the tree was a bit weak, it was a mistake to chop it again.
If I remember well I started it when repotted the mother tree when the buds started to swell.

When would you do the chop exactly? When buds are swelling or before? I can't remember when did I do it.
