Winter here in Maryland is highly unreliable, with temperatures and precipitation all over the place - more often than not it seems that we get rain instead of snow these days. Last year I'm certain that I lost one tree to the rain causing overly wet soil and roots. We had periods where the rain forced me to keep bringing trees inside.

We recently had a cold spell and some nice snow accumulated but before the week was over it was gone with rain on the way and more in the forecast. I have about half of my trees overwintering on the deck, grouped against the railing, with a sheet of burlap over the railing as a wind break. I had a lightbulb moment and came up with a simple solution for keeping my trees protected from all of the non-winter winter rains. Old tarp from the garage to the rescue.
