I have no idea what kind of apple it is, so I just hope the leaves can get smaller at some point. Do you guys recommend I seal the cuts, esp. the bigger one? To what extent is dieback an issue with apple trees? I could go buy some plumber's putty or something like that.

Definitely seal the wounds. You can use Elmer's glue in a pinch.
I've not seen much die back on apples but you will get more if you don't seal.

This one grew less that I hoped when I did the chop. I’ll probably repot next spring in draining soil, hoping that it’s going to react with a big push of growth.

As a sidenote, this one and another Malus (sp. unknown) I have both show some rust on a few leaves. I had a small outbreak of apple-cedar rust around early June on a garden center juniper, and cut off the infected branches straight away. But I’m confident these spots only appeared somewhere in late August/early September. Can apple-cedar rust show up at this time of year on apple? From what I read online, it’s supposed to show up a few weeks after it does on the juniper.

I’ll do a fungicide application this fall and a few rounds next April/May as new growth emerges.

Looks like a crabapple of some sort. I think the new soil will help a lot... the roots didnt look that healthy at repot time. The feeder roots on crabapple or malus shouldnt be that dark.

Not my most promising or interesting project, but it grew well all year in DE, and even got pretty fall colours, not something I expected.

Work on the branches will start next year (severe cutback on all but one of them, then wiring the new growth. The real question with this tree is how much I can reduce the leaf size and petiole length.
