Hey all,

Just trying to downsize my collection and sell off some smaller stock so I can afford to upgrade the indoor growing before winter hits.

I've got this small Japanese Maple for $40:

I'll take that Japanese maple off of your hands for 40$
You've been wintering outside correct? I sometimes forget you have access to the outdoors with all your indoor setups.

Nope, this tree has been grown exclusively indoors :p

Kidding of course, I do have a few outdoor trees but am trying to clear myself of them.

I think you got it the other way around!!! :p ;) LOL

Like you, I like tropical trees too and own about 30. Sometimes, I question my sanity for putting myself into that situation. As happy I am for summer to end...I dread winter because of the wintering requirement of the tropical trees.

I definitely hear you there.

I could sell the Trident for $100 if anyone is interested. It's been growing in a big cement tub and has a shallow root system and nice nebari. Just needs to thicken in the ground for a short time. Any takers?

How much longer until you move to south Florida Ryan? It's funny, because I would love to be able to grow trident and japanese maple, and I'm sure you'd like to grow unlimited trops outside.

Oh man, I'll gladly swap houses with you.

Can't you grow Trident there? I have several and they seem to be doing fine here in TX.

To be honest I haven't tried yet because I'm convinced that in order for it to be successful I'd have to refrigerate them for a couple months during the winter. This always comes up in any discussion I've had about it and I'm just not willing to do it. It seems like those that aren't refrigerated eventually weaken and die (they need extended dormancy). Obviously I don't want that either! But, nonetheless, I think I should try with some seedlings, hopefully from a southern state originally.

edit: I started a thread somewhat based on this. I'm sure you'll see it, I don't want to pollute Ryan's thread.

The Trident is now sold (and so is the Japanese Maple).

Picked up my new palmatum today and quite pleased with it. I think I'll take it to the Colin Lewis workshop I am going to in a couple weeks and see if he can set me on my way to a small broom. I thought about having him sign my copy of the survival manual, but it is marked as a discard from the Houston public library, which might be a little awkward.

I hope you like it and that it was worth the drive for you! I also met a guy from Woodbridge who bought this Trident tonight. I told him about BNut and he said he'd sign up tonight, so we shall see.

Hey Ryan, I'm debating repotting this maple I bought from you a while back. I haven't touched the roots since I purchased it from you ~5 years ago. I was wondering if you repotted it when you had it and for how long you had it? And what sort of shape the roots were in if you did?

It is fine health-wise but I did some branch selection and some work on the scars in the last couple years. I was thinking a repot might boost growth and recovery since it had been so long since it had been repotted. Input from maple experts appreciated as well. It is very much in development, but I think I'd like to start focusing on the branch structure. Should I not mess with it since it seems happy, or, put it in some fresh soil and hope it grows banana's, (figuratively of course)?

Here is the most recent picture that I have access to which is from Jan 2017. I've done a little more structure and scar carving since this photo. My repot window is very soon I believe.

Whew!
5 years on a young maple!
I'd be scared to see what's under the hood...

So is that two votes for repot? I'm curious to hear from Ryan if it might be more than 5 years since a repot. At least the soil seems to have held up pretty well. Can I do root cuttings with these like an elm, do you think?

I've read on here maple root cuttings don't work, that being said I stuck some tridents roots a few weeks back...
