Are we?

20170806_095950.jpg

So this started with a watering that left a pool out in the corner of this basket. I was going to water my plants and come back to it to see if it soaked in afterwards....about 15 minutes.

I ended up having an hour and a half long conversation with the neighbor....and returned to see this Pool...

Still There!

Some facts.
If kept moist...sphagnum will allow water to pass...

But if allowed to dry....even for a half a day....
It sheds water like a Ducks feathers.

What's going on under YOUR sphagnum?

Someone thought I was joking about "wet water"....
But a drop of dish soap will lower the surface tension of water...
Making it "wet".

Safe?

A more forceful watering....
Tapping the pot....

USING GOOD SOIL!

what fixes this problem?

It depends?

No!

Prevent it!

I almost lost my box this year....
Because a layer of finer DE caused this situation half way down the pot.

Sift!

Imagine if I mindlessly Watered this pictured tree and walked away!

It would have been absolutely unwatered!
Dead in a day!

So are we smart enough to break the Tension?

Are you OBSERVING?

I have a bottle of wetting agent on hand for pot plants and the yard.
I haven't noticed such a problem with bonsai soil as of yet but good to know that it is something to keep an eye out for.
