Soil for repotting pre bonsai

Could I substitute untreated aged wood chips rather than the pine bark or is the medium just too large?

I'm thinking for 1 gal pots and smaller.

Bark is much more rot resistant then wood and last longer in the soil then plain old wood...my .02.

Just to give you an update on my Shimpaku whips. I'm starting to see growth on one of them. That's a start after being repotted 3 weeks ago.
