I have been working on my oval pots this term and thought I would share a few with you.

All are medium size (14" to 17") ocals.

3b is done in a blue ash glaze.

12b is done in a matt gray glaze.

17b is done in a matt white glaze.

23b is done in a taffy glaze.

I hope you enjoy.

Please feel free to comment. All feedback is welcome.

Regards,
Paul

Very nice Paul... Often I see pots where the feet just don't seem to match the container. The feet on your containers are excellent...nice stability and very unobtrusive. Well done.

Irene,

They vary from 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" deep on the inside and range from 2" to 3" high on the side view.

Buddamonk,

Thanks for the positive feed back. What in particular do you like about the last two? I'm always interested in hearing what others like and don't like about specific pots.

Johng,

Thanks for taking the time to post your comment about the feet on my pots. I agree with your comment concerning pots with feet that don't seem to match or look unstable. I have attempted to give my ovals a good solid base without being heavy handed.

I would be interested in opinions on 28b. This is a different approach to the feet on an oval pot. This pot has six feet instead of the usual four.

Below are a couple of soft sided rectangles. This is another form I have been working on.

51b is done in a matt tan glaze.

57b is done in a matt brown glaze.

Once again, thanks for looking.

Regards,
Paul

I am not a fan:( Maybe on a round but I find it distracting on an oval.

Paul,

I am afraid I must agree with Johng concerning the 6 footed(?) pot.

On the bright side, I really like the shape and overall feel of all the pots, and really like the finishes. I hope to see pictures of them with trees some day soon!

Regards and keep up the good work!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback on the six footed oval.

I had made a few of these as an experiment. It's a different approach to the standard four footed oval and gives the pot a different feel. However, after reviewing photos of the pots, I came to the same conclusion, the pots look a bit off. I think John and B-nut hit the nail on the head, the look is a little distracting.

Could this be that our eye has been trained to expect a certain (standard four footed) image when looking at an oval pot and a six footed oval pot sends up a warning flag in our mind? In person, the pots don't look so different. But, in a photo, the difference really stands out.

I think before I pass final judgement on this design, I will plant a tree in one and see what the overall image looks like.

Martin,

Are there any particular glazes that you find more appealing? I am still refining some of my glazes and it helps to know what looks good and what doesn't work so well.

Below are a few round pots.

19b is done in an Oribe glaze.
19c is done in a Caramel glaze.
24b is done in a Blue Ash glaze.
33b is done in a Brown glaze with textured band.
52b is done in Nickle green and brown.

Your comments are always welcome.

Regards,
Paul

24b and 52b are both excellent. That blue glaze pot... wow. I'd buy a special tree just to plant it in that pot.

Bob, Simon, and B-nut,

I appreciate your input concerning the glazes and the positive feed back on the pots.

Are there any of the glazes shown that you feel don't work well?

B-nut,

That particular pot is 16 1/2" round and 4 1/2" deep and will require a special tree to fill it. I had a white flowering wisteria that I am currently working on in mind.

again - I think they all look terrific and all the different glaze are stunning. I could use any of these pots. It's mostly about picking the right pot and glaze for a certain tree.

by the way do you sell pots commercially? If not you should =)

A white flowering tree would look awesome in that pot. How about a nice japanese quince? :)

Buddhamonk,

I appreciate the compliment and the words of encouragement. Currently, I am not in the bonsai pot business. I mainly do this for my own enjoyment. However, I do entertain private sales on occasion.

As you pointed out, "It's mostly about picking the right pot and glaze for a certain tree." It seemed that I could never get the match-ups that I wanted. So, I decided to try making my own.

B-nut,

A Japanese Quince would be a very good choice. Unfortunately, that species of tree does not grow here in my location.
