Thought I’d share some recent trees that are about 40 days post collection. 2 of what I believe are white fir (thank you @PiñonJ for the ID help) and 2 englemann spruce. None of these trees are massive but they all exhibited characteristics I find desirable for more naturalistic trees. 1 of the white fir in particular though has an exceptional bend just above the base that will absolutely being exploited in design. The other fir has a a slight curve from roots to deadwood tip that I loved. I was told by my father in law that so many of these stunted trees have dead tips not only because of deer but also because porcupine chew them off!! I loved that. The 2 englemann are both small but have great bark and will make great examples of ancient trees in a small package. Considering I am 40 plus days out and things are still looking good I’m confident going into winter with these. Unlike mistakes made in the past I will wait at least 2 years before work is done.

nice Engelmann spruce … esp that one with the dead top, looking forward to how you Jin that.
they are both small but with the rugged bark should both be convincing. I like the smaller trees.

Wow you got some good ones! I'm hoping to go out in spring somewhere, though perhaps autumn is better given that the ground may still be frozen at the correct time... hmmm

There were several spectacular monster fir and spruce that I couldn’t have dug by myself even if I wanted to. When I’ve got the time and space I’m absolutely going to get a few of those.

Nice trees.
I recently drove through New Mexico and did some camping.
I love the state. It’s pretty everywhere, and the paved roads are the best in the country.

Very cool. I didn’t have a ton of perspective on our roads but I’ll take it. It’s good to know where tops at something. Our natural spaces are spectacular and very diverse. From desert to high desert to high mountain. Hit me up next time your rolling brought and I can show you some pretty great collecting spaces.

That would be great.
This trip was one way.
Florida to California to move my daughters car and stuff to her new job and apartment.
we took a roundabout route using surface roads as often as possible. New Mexico is the only str we entered twice. We cut across the northeast heading north, then down from Colorado and into Arizona.
I spent way too little time in Chaco Canyon and hope to return there sometime.
I have worked most of my life in wet places, from Lake Superior to the Everglades but I could retire in New Mexico.
