I figured I'd make a thread to document my collection explorations and possible candidates for next spring. Mostly for myself so I can remember locations and material that interested me.

I live in Northern AZ and around late October through the rest of winter, I'll be hiking in the national forests and BLM land around here. It's too damned hot to go on 20 mile camping treks right now😩😂 I'll be getting the necessary permits for anything I collect on public lands. So all legal. For non-public lands I'll obviously be seeking permission from the owner.

The first entry is at a wash by my house. It's city land by the airport so I'll be seeking out permission from the city council before collection time. All the trees growing in the wash are considered invasive and some are considered noxious, so I shouldn't have issues getting permission. This wash is a Tamarisk collection paradise😂

A bunch of salt cedar like this. Most are a no-go for Yamadori as they've grown into sandstone crevices, but I'll probably do several ground layers.

This massive Russian Olive tree! Obviously not suitable for Yamadori, however, I'll definitely be air layering some large branches.

And a bunch of photos of the Tamarisk "forest"

My hiking partner, Lexi, enjoying the adventure.

And this beast of a salt bush I might dig up one day after I experiment more with smaller specimens. I have another thread where I'm experimenting with one. I'll put a Coke can next to it the next time I walk down that way, pictures don't give it just for how thick that trunk is😂

Beastly. I bet that thing would survive if you dove in. A nursery specimen isn’t truly going to give you the info you need. Digging wild salt bush. I’m sure there are other smaller ones around you? They are everywhere here. You may even want to try and dig a smaller one now, and see if it pushes next spring. It very well may.

You probably know that Salt cedar/tamarisk is extremely invasive in the SW U.S. It's not a native species and there are big efforts to get rid of it. Same for Russian Olive.

Below is link to a story that contains info on where to volunteer to help remove Salt Cedar down near Tucson. I'd bet there are similar programs near you.

Don't know if you've looked into permits yet, but with the poaching of native cactus out there of late, it looks like permits for native species could be complicated, even on BLM land.

Oh yeah, I'm aware. There might be something similar for my County, I'll have to ask around.

As for a BLM permit....I've done some research, and I was still a little confused. I work for the BOR which is a part of DOI, so I was thinking about emailing and asking someone at the nearest BLM office, from my work email, and seeing if I could get some professional courtesy lol.

Good luck. It does seem very confusing.

Did an 8 mile hike this morning about 30 minutes from my house. Found some junipers, but none that were worth digging up imo. But I did find a Yamadori candidate, I'm just not sure what species it is. Picturethis can't decide if it's a Desert Apricot, Fragrant Sumac, or a Velvet Ash. Either way the leaves are very small, it's been growing on sandstone bedrock with half a foot worth of sand on top, and is stunted from it. 18B67CB5-3256-4D57-9357-19B03DBC4409.jpeg

And of course I found some slab material and interesting rock formations as always when you hike around here.

And a coyote den.

And this massive Juniper that didn't like the view of its original spot so decided to move...

And what's a little desert hike without coming across some type of spawn of Satan?
