I actually used vaseline to cover a large cut on a Bald Cypress about 9 years ago. So the wound has healed, but as you can see, it is discolored and looks black. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix the discoloration?

Try scrubbing it with a nylon brush...?

That was my first thought, but this looked really "baked-in". I just did some brush scrubbing on my boxwoods to get the algae and moss off the bark. In some areas, even light scrubbing took the bark from furrowed to smooth. So, I thought I would post it just to be sure that was the obvious first-step in situations where the bark needs cleaning before doing something that might take years to return to normal.

Shampoo for extremely greasy hair could help. But in all fairness, extracting hydrocarbons from bark is it's own branch of alchemy. Benzene, methanol and other organic solvents would work best but they might kill your tree.

Just a thought:
Get yourself a bottle of olive oil, spray the entire trunk so it will have a darker tone overall. Hiding in plain sight!
