Hello Everyone,

I’m getting ready to put my trees away for the winter and was wondering if it’s ok to keep the sphagnum moss I use for moisture retention on top of my bonsai soil?

Thanks for any help,

Bobby

It depends on how you store your trees.
If it's in the dark or mulched or the pots are covered in some way, the moss will turn into compost.
I'm personally not a big fan of compost on top of my soil.
If the plants are in sunlight, the sphagnum will provide a damp layer, so other moss might grow. Which is a neutral thing, good or bad depending on who you ask.

I store my trees in an unheated and dark shed . I’m gonna go ahead and remove the moss. Thanks for the advice.
