Seedling
Yeah I once collected and planted up over eighty acorns with a view to growing lots of oaks for a forest planting, but in my niaivity I failed to cover the seed trays with armour plating. The squirrels had every one of the acorns away within two days.
Later I secured a few potted-up acorns behind some mesh which actually had the chance to germinate. I moved the seedlings out from protective custody to grow them on and the squirrels returned and dug up several of the four inch tall seedlings to get the remains of the acorn from the roots. Damn little critters need culling over here too, if only so the native red squirrel can recollonise.
They do not seem interested (yet) in my older larger oaks, though none has borne acorns so far.
