I grew some cuttings last year in a large, deep pot and they grew the long roots needed for this job.
I have plenty acacias that do nothing year after year, so I decided to do something different :)

cool idea man. I'd guess that even if those acacia die the fig will eventually swallow it all up and cover any trace that it was ever there. Leaving you with a huge swolllen base. Neat warm weatehr species

2 years in from starting...
the fig roots are the long roots and the host tree roots have basically not grown at all...

Nice.
ive started some cuttings and have one growing in a rotting termite ridden log. I’m hoping for a similar effect.

the acacias are 100 % - top growth is normal still ...
in my neck of the woods host trees take forever to die - decades...
because of the overwhelming presence of the ficus in the pots, I reckon another 2 years of life maybe??

I just got one of these figs last week. I am open to possibilities and still thinking about options.

This should be neat.
I have one growing on a Bald Cypress that died on me, and one on a rock, and a few growing over the redneck shed I use for my shady spot.
eventually I hope to have my bonsai workspace inside of a tree.

this is senegalia nigrescens (knobthorn) that died off on 1 side. I think it will look cool when the fig takes over on the missing side?
