This may be a stupid question, but I have a Hiller elm which is my first ever elm. I'm in Michigan 6B, its been down to 30's the past few noghts. I noticed the leaves on my elm are "some" are curling up. Is that normal? Like I said I'm new to elms, just want to make sure that is normal. Does it do that before it drops for the winter?

Perhaps...i'd think yes..?
my friend in S. E. Michigan said the cold is coming in fast.
leaves are dropping off of the trees around the neighborhood more than those in pots..normal?
They're (the deciduous) starting to look a bit first stage of paper leather here.
First deep freeze this weekend right, how are you wintering it?

I have 2 Chinese elms Steve.
How they're still alive after 2 winters is beyond me.
I dont give them any special consideration at all.
Anyways, they have been curly for 2 weeks.
They're dead but still green.
Kind of. Sickly yellow green.
Chinese elms (Jacquelline Hillier is a kind of Chinese elm I believe) are zone 5 trees.
Up here it's been dipping down into the 20's almost every night for a week or more. Had snow 2 days ago.
Once my trees start staying frozen all day it's time to think about putting them away.
I dont put them down for winter until then.
That way they stay that way until the end of at least March.
I would say your tree is getting sleepy.
Ready for winter hibernation.
