This Shimpaku has not been draining at all. It grew well but I didnt like that it wasnt getting clear drainage. Soil was starting to wash away from the top, I couldnt get fertilizer to pour through last fertilization... ive had it 3yrs now with no serious work done other than some structural wiring... two summers ago.

I did take cuttings and added them to my cutting tray. Need to buy a second clear tote for the top as a humidity dome. So far Ive taken korean hornbeam cuttings, trident maple cuttings, chinese elm cuttings, shimpaku cuttings, and im trying kei apple cuttings. My set up is a tray of pine bark under the cuttings which are in a draining tray made for 2x2 pots. I use these usually for my vegetable starts. I filled the cutting tray with bonsai soil.
Some of the thinner starts that were wilting got replaced with the juniper and kei apple tonight:
