This summer has been brutal for a lot of people. We hit 100 degree days back on June 11th and it has not let up. Yesterday got up to 111 and looking like it’ll be the same today and tomorrow. We’re not even in our hottest month yet. Trust me when I say I’m ready to move.

I wanted to start a thread geared towards people sharing their experiences with summertime heat this year. Ways they’ve managed it and just a place to vent (pun intended).

Unfortunately, my backyard is rather small, east facing, but a good portion is shaded by a very large oak in the neighbors yard until about 11am and then it’s full blast of sun. This has made bonsai growing difficult to say the least and this summer has just escalated problems I was already having. I’m learning and trying to adapt, but ultimately there’s only so much you can do with the environment around you. I’m moving away from non-native trees, and if they aren’t native, only getting ones with high heat tolerance.

I have a few trees suffering. My maples are definitely not liking this heat at all, but thankfully they’re all in development stages so I’m not stressed about them. I’m actually going to be moving their bench to almost completely shaded area against the house to help block the wind, as I’m finding hot, dry wind is a lot of what causes the leaves to desiccate. My mugo pine probably isn’t going to make it. Honestly, this one was on me. I had worries of him getting repotted into a pond basket with the heat here, but decided to roll the dice and try it and he’s been getting cooked even with watering 2-3 times a day.

How’s your summer been so far? Any losses or struggles? What have you been doing to combat the heat? I’ll tell ya, an ice cold beer really helps me.

Sounds like a "more water" problem.

At my last house I erected a shaded area with an inexpensive 30% shade cloth that was available at the local big box store. Just a thought. I have not recreated it at the new house so I can't take a pic of it.

Yeah I’ve actually thought about getting one of these, my issue is my grow area is in a triangle shaped area and not sure how I’d set that up. The only triangle shaped shade covers I can find are for outdoor patios and such and definitely block out too much sun.

Despite being 1 or 2 zones lower, its not been much colder over here. Some maple shoots literally look like baked to a crisp in the oven. The sun retards new growth on the more resistant cultivars and seedlings.
Shishi doesnt care.
If you decide not to move, I strongly encourage seedling selection and finding JMs in your area that do well enough with little protection, for cuttings and seeds

Btw, Peter-chan just did a video on heat protection
