This larch was just another one of the plain upright larches I rooted up from a swamp after taking myself and one of my sons to a rural based counselor during his get-in-trouble years. Every week I'd drive by this swamp on my way--one week I stopped and slogged out and got this one. It was essentially the same size but had a bunch of very thin branches that had sprouted between some clunky branches. I saved and trained these branches and cut off the big ones. I love it for its wonderful branches.
This larch had a extra tall diseased spire (it was even taller) and a few small branches to train. I pulled the higher roots down and wired them against the trunk for years--many wirings later it has become quite cool.
This creation is from the hand of Lenz but now I tend it. Last year I stabilized the porpoise spine with epoxy. This year it gets a re-potting later. It reminds me of the hookah smoking caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland.
