Good luck with it! There's a pretty recent thread with someone asking about this and a few people saying it's pretty difficult.

Did you remember to scrape the sapwood off after peeling off the cambium?

Keep us posted with your results!

the tree decided to shoot a new leader from under the lower girdle spot. another sign that its through dealing with its upper half im guessing.

i could use some opinions on when a good time to reduce this 8'+ high trunk would be.
are sweetgums fine with a major trunk chop at collection time?

That's a good spot to layer. Nice technique.

I would chop it in a month or so and leave it till next year for removal.

You probly can get away with a chop and removal this year....but it'll set you back uneccessarily.

the new job fell through so it looks like im not moving.
after i chopped this guy back last month it really started taking off. no roots in sight so i was thinking of cutting back the callus a little. not sure if i should just wait till spring.

That is sad, it looked promising though, I plan to airlayer some next spring, but I think I should give up since so far nobody has succeed on this.

So... did you not cut deeply enough into the wood? Or is sweetgum just not doing air layers?
