thanks. i did see that thread. i barely scraped the sapwood, but i think the wire girdle should be enough.Good luck with it! There's a pretty recent thread with someone asking about this and a few people saying it's pretty difficult.

unfortunately im going to have to collect it at the end of the month and hope for the best since im leaving the state soon.I would chop it in a month or so and leave it till next year for removal.
You probly can get away with a chop and removal this year....but it'll set you back uneccessarily.
it put out two hair thin roots, callused up some more, and just continued growing like i never did anything to it. I'm leaving sweetgum alone.Any updates on this?

yeah, I'd try something else and just forget about sweetgum.That is sad, it looked promising though, I plan to airlayer some next spring, but I think I should give up since so far nobody has succeed on this.
