Actually as far as I know Red Pine ( Pinus Densiflora) from Northern China and Korea are the main branch of the family, the JRP is a subspecies.....so I have heard. Seems like the Korean and Chinese are more resistant to the fungal infection by the longhorn beetle which is devastatingJapanese trees at the moment.I would really like to become more familiar with the Korean Pine species. I have grown Korean White Pine from seed, or tried and found it to be a really nice tree but not suited to the beginner. I have grown the Korean strain of Pines Thunbergii and in Michigan USA they do really well. I am not familiar with the Korean Red Pine though. Where might I educate myself without going there?
JBP and Korean black pine are also same genus and species ( subspecies) find the Korean one from Jeju Island be be the most aggressive growthwise. Vance are you talking about Pinus Koreansis? Heard thwy are tough havent tried it though. Korean Red Pine are an awesome tree tough as nails, backbud well even on old wood and are a very feminine and charming tree. Black Pine is a bit more manly looking. Heheh come to Korea! Will show you the best trees.....theres a bonsai museum....um botanic garden on Jeju Island too
