I have some tamaracks that needles have been steadily browning… I originally thought it was sun related so I’ve put them in the shade and it seems to be continuing.

One tree was reported this year minor root work

The future forest was collected this year and was and seems to be the worst of it.

my third larch that wasn’t touched and seems fine.

is this fungal ? Or is it related to the repotting/collecting?

I have the same problem. I have 4 tamaracks and one has develoed a lot of browning of the needles, compared to the others. It does have some new growth at the ends of branches, so I don't think it just suddenly died. I have no idea what the problem is.

I would guess it's a root problem if you disturbed the roots after green showed on the buds OR reduced the roots to much. I also don't think they can handle full, hot sun very much/long.

Check to see if they are pot bound or if all the root mass is receiving water. I had a few of my western larch start to lose needless like this with plenty of loss. I gently pulled one out of the pot to inspect right after watering and found the top layer was preventing water from distributing down and the center of the root mass was bone dry. Ended up taking a chopstick and poking holes through the soil to allow water to drain through the system. Almost immediately all of the trees started to push tons of growth where those needless died off.

I think these young ones just can’t take the sun like mature trees. About 1 July I move mine to dappled shade to get past the summer heat. Right now mine get a couple hours of morning sun and that’s it. Once they get burned tips they’ll continue to brown and drop off it seems, but that is usually followed by a new set of growth. Right now my Japanese larch are all dropping old needles from the spring and putting out new growth. My Am. larch have been kept out of the sun so are not browning.

Larch shouldn't need protection from sun, unless just collected. If you collected that larch with needles at the time, that's probably what damaged them.

I have larch that are out in full sun during summer , I always water daily though to keep rootball moist since they like wetter soil .. just like spruce .. either watering to keep moist and in full sun , or rationed water in shade.

I had a couple for this might be the 3rd summer always kept in full sun.. maybe it’s the root work/ collecting. They seem stable in the shade now
