I have a JBP about 9 inches tall.
Last year's needles are.... (WERE) .... about 4-5 inches.
I couldn't get wire on the damn thing without spending a day or two keeping the damn long needles from being trapped.
Soooo..... I ..... CUT... the silly needles and left some (about 2") still on for photosynthesis or some good stuff.

And THEN I could get wire on the thing.

Even if the tips where I cut it turn a bit brown and elicit derision? :D

JBP? 9 inches? Very light bark for a JBP Interesting! Must be very close up. Maybe its my bi-focals. LOL
