New to the hobby. Could you explain what DE is please?
diatomaceous earth,
in granular larger particle size like that of plain, additive free kitty litter.
Napa 8822 and other oil absorption products are a main source for this inexpensive soil medium.

My latest cheapo buy.

clearance choices are getting better as the summer passes.
Black hills spruce. # 10 container
For 30$.
I’ve read some of the threads here on Black Hills Spruce and Spruce in general.

it seems the ideal time is obviously spring before budbreak to do Cronin. I’ve also gathered that late summer is also good.

I will not attempt a very hard prune but instead prune away what I need to see the structure of the tree.F7925B5A-A45B-49BC-9B9D-4922049A6109.jpeg
Very dense and bushy. Update to fallow shortly. 😋

Latest clearance haul.
2 Sabina ‘scandia’ junipers
A winterberry, and a fragrant sumac. 5FE62E0C-ACB9-425C-9022-A5F42BF87C72.jpeg
Set me back 28$. Cheap entertainment IMO.
The 2 deciduous will go in the ground to fatten up.
The 2 Sabina’s, I’ve cleaned out the dead and anticipate a hard cut back come spring. 9E6AF01D-6477-41E1-8DD6-4E0F9E39396D.jpegBAF691FA-D7E9-4DAE-BFE5-2DD2D93DE509.jpeg532159DA-B587-44C8-8100-6EFC5F649B2F.jpeg

**OK, I’m not sure if this thread already exists, if so, let me know and I won’t continue. 😁

I really want to see some nice examples of crap material turned terrific! -Ldirt cheap rubbish given a shot at beauty.

My inspiration for this,...... well most of my plants.
And, my recent 90% off, “please take these off our hands,” purchases from Lowe’s.

Update on the 1$ blue rug spruce. -the 2.25$ blue rug is dead.
Rewired this tree a few days ago.

This black hills spruce. Dead and gone.
😆 Most likely too much work at once.

I was also suspect to the soil condition.
It never dried out. I forced myself to water it at times. In 8 months, maybe 8 times.
The soil remains wet now even though I haven’t watered it in weeks. 🤨IMG_9331.jpeg

Agggh. I really liked it. I am trying spirea but only get new growth from the bottom. You would think that kind of thing would make a good nebari, but it does not.
I have actually thought about wrapping stems.

I have seen spirea in garden centers with nice bases. It’s just hard to deal with the long twiggy growth IMO.

I think that's why you don't see pictures of spirea bonsai with lots of blooms.
