Recent shot. It’s finally slowing down, and I hope to see some nice fall color in a month or so. The shape is a little goofy so far, but it should start to round out better as the primary and secondary branches develop.

Spring work. It had filled in so densely that I had to use a photo to find the wires:

After removing (hopefully) all the wires, it was pruned back to secondary branches and pairs of shoots:

Done for now:

Night shot a day or so later:

I’ll try to get another section of apex growing back to the left and shift the canopy a bit left as well. Right now it’s a bit lopsided.

After the late May cut back, I let it grow for several weeks.

I defoliated most of the tree to get a good look into the secondary branching.

Anything growing up or down, or was getting too thick too far out was removed.

Working my way up the tree, I pruned back, and wired out several secondary branches.

Let’s see how quickly it is full again…

Tree looks beautiful in leaf. Awesome base. Once defoliated, concern for reverse taper 2/3 way up tree? Big branch cluster on inside of turn on right.
It’s a slight bulge that can be carved away, but since that section also moves toward the viewer, it’s worse in photos than in life. Frankly, I’ve struggled to like the shape of the trunk on this one and think the best solution is time and allowing it to get taller by about double.

I read every single post , and studied every photo. Killer tree as everyone says, very inspiring. Is this your personal favorite Maple?
Thanks, glad you got something from the thread. It is important in this hobby to see the cause-effect relationship to our techniques. It really helps if you can see those 15 years click by in several pages of a thread over 15 minutes.

It is actually my least favorite of the 3 potted tridents I have in my garden, and for the right price, I’d box it up tonight.😂

This is a VERY nice trident. Any reasonable offer would have a comma in it.
