The 2022 5 year discount rack contest

Darn it, I have nothing off the clearance rack lately save for a sorry looking hand sized Adenium Socotranum that came as a bargain equivalent of $8. (Should have been around $30+). Not bonsaiable though, or at least I have NEVER tried to bonsai an Adenium 😂😂.

Got 5 years to try :)

Well now that we have started here is mine as of today. Planted on a 12"x12" tile.this is where it will set for maybe 2 years untouched. Prune back hard on 3 year prune and maybe wire some on the 4 year and pot on the 5 year so its ready to go by the end of the 5th year. Well thats the plan.20220502_133430.jpg

I like it already
It’s not in the best of condition. It had a few rotted tips on the stems which I cut and it oozed brown water rather than the usual milky sap 😬. So I may have to cut it back a little further on the stems until there is a healthier tissue response. Good news is that the caudex has firmed up (was a bit squishy when acquired)

So here’s where mines at so far. I managed to flatten out the roots and get them radial. It has responded well with lots of spring growth and I may or may not have tried my hand at grafting on it…. The scion is Kurui jishi “confused/crazy lion”. I enjoy it’s small leaves, it’s like the shishigashira without the mounding habit. Considering this is my 1st attempt at grafting I’m giving it 50% chance of taking.

Already stepping up your game. Nice. This going to be a good 5 years. May we all learn alot.

It’s looking sad. As mentioned some of the branches were less than healthy so I had to cut back until I found healthy tissue and the signature milky sap. I’d prefer not to have cut it back quite so far when it’s coming out of dormancy but needs must!
Get the feeling I may have to take off that last leaf as that stem is not looking too clever either. Brown powder is cinnamon which I applied after the sap had stopped running.

Bit of wire just to stop them pointing straight up.

edit: Just took off that last leaf. Fortunately just the top 5mm or so was enough to take it “back to sap” and not brown ooze.

I’m hoping this one makes a full recovery.

So I'm kinda new and this will be my first entry in a contest. Do we start individual threads for the trees or put progress pics in here? I think I saw some discussion about that earlier in the thread but I'm not sure what was decided.

Well, I feel dumb. I just skimmed through and saw the question was answered. My first progress threads will be starting soon...

So when will this contest become official and end up pinned at the top with the others? Do we still need more entrants?

I do not know when and if it will get pinned. I have messaged @Bonsai Nut about it but no response yet. Hopefully soon.
You are all set up. Note - you are the moderator of this contest forum. Within the forum you have moderator power to edit, move posts, etc. Use the power wisely :)
