Happy new year. Let’s see what everyone’s air layering aspirations are.
I wanna shorten my JM, so I’m thinking of layering the top 3 branches all together. Maybe I’ll win, maybe I’ll learn. But the way the branches are now I think are all ugly so a rebuild is definitely in order.BC5200FB-EFF6-450F-80DB-63E2E15124D1.jpeg4C441E75-61DB-4137-82CF-801E15733694.jpeg

Also, this olive. Now a few months ago I bought one, chopped it, and all the pieces died off, so this one will get layered. I noticed some fat bulge below the soil line which will make a great base for a short little tree, so this will get layered too.

Was hoping this thread would have gained more traction

Anyways, my 8 months of crazy heat is about to start, and I’ve set 2 out of the 3 air layers I’m planning

I bought this cherry coz I was bored, naturally it came grafted

I want to layer the top of my olive tree coz there are branches, however, it’s got a fat lump under the soil layer which will make an interesting base, so I did the bottom

It’s been 3 months, almost 4. Cherry calloused over and had to clean it again

But the damn olive tree has done nothing
Olives are meant to be easy, no?
And I have perfect climate for olive, no?

This is a water oak layer that I started in May. The entire tree is an air layer from 2021. I tried to air layer the same spot last year, but it bridged the gap I made. Hopefully I will have better luck this year.

Carpinus koreana, as started may 22nd. Bark peeled below those several branches coming out from one side of the trunk. Trying to create a multitrunk or raft.

Separated today. Unfortunately it was impossible to see how long the roots were before separation. In the Future I will use the plastic bag way instead so I can see whats going on.
IDK if this will survive.

Second air layer attempt ever, acer circinatum. I found a bunch of doug fir blowdown deep in the woods that made some giant old vine maples they landed on grow in weird heliotropic (I think that is the word) ways. I really liked the look of this one. The pic sucks, sorry. Too bad the branches died close to the fork. Still, very exciting.. it lives! Question: would I have been able to trim branches or leaves at the time of separation? Or, when is the best time to make a change to said tree? I couldn't decide if trimming anything at separation was a good idea or not. I figured all the energy was in the roots and it would be fine but didnt want to risk it

Also pro tip from a big amateur.. once you cut it.... you gotta hike it out! That was a big epiphany 🤣
