As hard as it is to get them where you want them, it's much harder to keep them there because they keep growing and important parts can die and need to be replaced at the same time we are reigning-in other parts.

Nah man, just stop watering and get some varnish and green paint.
Paint the foliage, cover in varnish so it stays in place and you've reduced maintenance to about 30 minutes a year. Maybe some shoe polish for the juniper bark..
I think we might be doing this all wrong!
