I would recommend getting some wire on those branches now before they get any bigger. It will be much easier to direct the growth at this point. It looks like this is a super fast growing tree so you are going to want to keep an eye on the wire so that it doesn't cut in.

The internodes are long. I'm hoping with ramification it will fair better.

But a cut made great division. With no shoot die back.20150725_074600.jpg
There is also 2 buds at the base of each new branch. Two of which may be the keepers. Something to deal with.

I cut those leaves at the base to reduce swelling, I found it to help on ficus. Less knuckle.

Even deep interior.

Perfect division.

A new friend. Dust size.

This guy kind of puttered out after those last flowers.
The roots are, well, loving that pure sifted 8822. Chock full that pot is. All feeders? Definitely. A lot!20151024_101200.jpg

Next year. Cut down pond basket for sure.
I still have to safely remove the back trunk. Safely as to not kill it off and ruin the base. To do this, I will let it get going in spring, and chop it off early summer.
That should give me low buds to save the base.

I think the top of the main trunk will go late winter. I need all the resources in the new lead and this may help kick start some buds on the other trunk, if they are reading each other.

I cleaned up my lil rooftop today.

This is about the last thing I need to repot so I just did it. Lil over 25 degrees we're staying.

Along with the whiteworms, these lil black pinhead size $&!@×=%&!
Got killed. F those things.

After I dug out the hole, which was cool, cuz I finally got to have my own "punky wood" moment.

That branch is bridging the two trunks, it seems pretty righteous so I should be good to chop a trunk and not lose the base.

But now the new dilemma of which trunk to keep.....it has possibilities from both sides with the wide base front.
The Uro is hidden at either good front.

Here's where I pondered to repot or not.

I had to cover those roots for the year.
But I ran out of room to cover em from the top.
Can't put it in a pond basket....
So I made room at the bottom.
20160316_162209.jpg

A non draining dip in the middle of the pot, and Unsifted 8822, made for some dead ass roots directly under the core.
Perfect!

20160316_160727.jpg
There's a cut I made last year...with 2 roots growing out of it, pretty nice...I cut it back to the left branch...but will Probly cut it off if that wee right one just above it gets good this year.

20160316_162234.jpg
Probly about double the useful feeders as last year....with sifted soil this year, less pests, I expect this to grow a lot more than last year.

Final Setting next.

This looks like a the upper limit of what you could keep around the apt, Sorce. Anyhow, did you ever identify it? I may be way off, but it reminds me of Persimmon. If I could see the bloomed flowers, I think I could be certain then.

Edit: Reread the whole thread again. I see that you've ID'd it as Buckthorn already :D

I like these trees. The kind that makes you make decisions fast...
Can't wait too long to get rid of stuff or it goes funky.
I got buds all around the collar of the branches.

20160421_093013.jpg

Got some low buds where I needed em too!
That will allow for the chop to there.
Exactly where I wanted.

Love it!

In bonsai, are growth irregularities encouraged, like from genetic mutations? Is there a difference between an old tree with a genetic mutation and an old tree with an aged aesthetic.

I, am anything but qualified to answer that!
But as for this one's oddity, it could be interesting.

I guess some could be worth $.
And some could be terrible!

That looks really cool. In my mind's eye, when I think of a great old tree, it always has that stereotypical hollow where an owl or something lives.
