You know folks if you build a soil on a RAW organic [ e.g. Bark ] and inorganics, it is going to decay.

So we know the optimum is - the ball bearing idea - spheres [ think marbles ] and how they touch
each other [ observe a bag of marbles ]

Allows much air in.

Then if those marbles were made from fired clay [ Lecca ] as in those used for hydroponics, the moisture
is held within, the fired clay structure.

So you have free flow of air and moisture retention.
Excellent for Bonsai soil. { try 5mm to 3mm spheres Lecca does have them ]

You can manipulate this further with porous at the bottom Bonsai pots or totally non porous Bonsai
pots [ e.g. Stoneware pots - 3 to 5% porous or Porcelain [ can be coloured not always white ] at less than
1% porous.
Porous at the bottom is normally glazed around the sides. [ as usual Frost problems ]

Now if you add Bark or Coco peat or other, these materials will decay and compost. Losing size,
and often becoming mushy.
Too much water retained and no air. Roots suffer.

However if you compost, the size is already small and not much is needed - less than 1/3 of the soil.
Use measures by volume /parts.

Additionally compost should be aged for 1 year [ Tropical climate ] and in the making kept just
moist or you lose the valuable soluble parts.

So as we found it [ Tropics ] organics as aged compost, restores soil microbe harmony and handles
fertiliser capture well.

The problem as you see, is the first stage of decomposition in bark or other raw organic.

The compost further ages into black roundish balls often the size of the inorganic particles.honn

Now where is my Sorce [ proof reader ] did I leave anything out or badly explained ?

As usual, please correct any false science, thank you.
Good Day

* What if we found the optimum soil mix as just Lecca and compost ?????????

Pumice is still supposed to decay with time becoming clay [ perhaps an imperfect volcanic glass ?]
