wire/ splint/ wound dress the broken branches. pot it up etc. no reason to let it die just because it lost a few branches... respect the tree and give it a shot my friend. that's what I say.
I’m taking care of it still. I’m not letting it die. But the value went way way down. So unti I figure out what’s going to happen I can’t do a whole lot. The branches that were split that didn’t fall off are wired so they can heal. But if they will fuse back together I’m not sure.

As long as there is a line of cambium between the two, they will eventually fuse (this is how grafting works). However, it can be 3 to 5 years to produce good mechanical strength (which comes from producing a new continuous shell of wood across the gap). But I agree that it may not be worthwhile, long term.

Nevertheless, it is a 'growable' tree, just not what you paid for. I would consider a large partial refund instead of replacement, if that is a possibility.

It's sad the shipper was so cheap. That tree is pretty small and the box vastly too big...Simply filling the dead space around the tree with packing peanuts and using an appropriately-sized box probably would have done the trick-wouldn't have cost much more to do any of that.

When I ship a tree, I build a wooden inner structure to prevent damage like you experienced. It's a lot of work but the tree is much more protected from damage during shipping.

I like that. Great idea!

He did have packing peanuts. But the box was a little big.

That's the point. Box allowed too much room for the tree to shift, around and probably not enough peanuts to immobilize it. I've had MUCH larger trees shipped to me with no damage at all, in cardboard boxes.

I suspect the shipper didn't pack the peanuts, and just poured them in with the expectation that they wouldn't settle or compact.
