As I have gotten older, attractive bark has become more important to me, maybe because I appreciate its age more. I've started some ch. Quince and a Stewartia growing on - should be ready maybe by the time I retire.
Here's a much maligned tree, the ubiquitous Fuji Cherry, which many bonsai hobbyists have in their collection in the UK. At about 20 years old it gradually changes from a smooth tan to an almost black, warty bark. The flowers cheer me up as it always heralds the beginning of the next growing season. Hopefully, the pond basket has done it's job and it can go in a pot I bought for it last year.
