Here’s my first styling of a yamadori Lodgepole Pine collected in spring 2018 at about 3000 feet in the Cascade mountain range. I don’t fully have the front or style figured out, so here are some options ranked frommost to least favorite:

For now I’m just working on tightening the loop in the trunk and setting some primary movement in the branches. Lodgepole are classically pretty straight and droopy in their branching, so this work will set the structure for later refinement.

opinions welcome!

Before and after collected englemann spruce styling. First time bending a large branch with rebar. Bent the apex to the right by 15 degrees or so. Happy with the results. Each branch is LOADED with buds to open next spring. Can’t wait to show off the surface root more at repot. Probably In spring 2021. 264587

Here’s a better look at that root. I love the way it curves from being horizontal to the pot, to the trunk, then canopy in a graceful way. Going to look so cool in a lotus pot or drum of some sort. 264590

This is a Japanese Red Pine "aurea" which just got it's first styling a month or so ago. It's interesting in that during winter the foliage turns a vibrant yellow, and then reverts to a light green over the warmer months. I am currently watching it turn back from yellow as we head into our second month of Spring. I'll be looking at decandling this year (it hasn't been done before) to add some refinement to the design and get a reduction in needle length.

Love the trunk on that one. You carve that yourself Dave?

I did, in fact. I probably would have done it differently now versus then but it came out pretty good I guess.

I think it looks great. And your right maybe it’s the foliage that needs some love. When you wire it out, maybe you could split up the pads a bit, to come in front of that trunk. Break it up a bit. 🤷🏼‍♂️264919
Dug this natural group this year. Fraxus Velutina. Would never look great individually, but should make a great group composition. There are two more that fell off at collection that will be replaced next spring. Along with moving the one tree that sits right out front.
