When I saw this beautyberry, I thought it would be a pretty normal little clump. Then I start to dig and discovered the rest of the iceberg. I knew I had to keep it.

Very unique. If it were mine, I might trunk chop it just above that first branch, with the cut going downward, diagonally to the left to avoid/minimize reverse taper issues.

That is a possibility but I kinda like the reverse taper in this case. It's fits the weirdness of the tree. Also, as you can see by the trunk, this plant does sometimes die back. I'm playing it a little safe.

Exactly GroveKeeper, no hurry whatsoever, that trunk chop could be done well into the future, once the tree gets established in the pot (assuming you were to decide to go that route). But I see what you mean, I agree it could make a strikingly shaped tree just building on what is there. The first photo alone had me thinking it was a ginseng root, but then, those aren't found growing in FL anyways.

Keep us updated as you work on this one.

Callicarpa americana?
Be prepared for head aches.
They have a tendency to die back.

Haha, yeah. You can tell just my looking at them lol. But I think the trunk is interesting enough to keep. It might end up being and "In flux" bonsai.

Many people will tell you it's not worth the effort. I'd agree with them.

You're in Southwest FL? Probably too hot to grow the Japanese variety, but North Central FL they can grow it. It's good.

It might not be worth the time but the trunk it unique enough to keep for a while. I don't expect any great degree of refinement out of it.

The japanese variety does look pretty nice though. I'll look into it.

You and I both do not get enough chill hours to grow the Japanese variety of Beauty Berry. We get about 200-400hrs on average. You probably get less than I do. Not enough to provide sufficient dormancy.

Isn't it a problem that there aren't any roots?
