How well do these back bud on older wood? I have one I'd like to play with but it has a portion of the lower trunk bare

They do not backbud very well.
In the very first development-stages you will have to put the green
physically (I mean by wiring) near to the trunc.
A special feeding-regime can help to promote the inner backbudding
but this is another strory ...

An update of my "Abor Vitae", Thuja Occidentales, Eastern white cedar ....
Slowly, very slowly i am approaching my design-vision ...
If you want to obtain such raw-material, than ask the owner of your local
garbage-dump.
Each spring and autumn a whole lotta stumps will be tossed out of the gardens
in your neighborhood ... So simple is that ... (Just an example ...)
The rest is gentle work with the creature in empathy and passion for the wonder of creation ...
