Thought I'd try a large pine.

As we scroll thru the sides of this tree it will be apparent which view I may choose in the future as I work to make that view better.

Here can be seen the bushiness of the tree against how I plucked the needles and what they look like when cut.

A top view of some wireing.

How I handles the large stub of a first branch being looked at in this needle clean out photo and how I used the smaller branches to hide that large stub. You are looking at it from the back and above. Looking straight ahead it does not look so apparent what I did.

I have been following this tree since 1994 at the bonsai nursery. That is 16 years that I know of since it has had work done to it. The trunk has grown about 1 inch or more in that time and it was repotted into better soil about 6 years ago because it was showing signs of folding up due to being planted in mud.

I finally mustered the nerve to talk about buying it last year. It may have been the best $175.00 bucks I ever spent.

Cheers, Al

That's a great tree, if you live long enough to finish it.

keep it green,
Harry

You mean, if "you" live long enough to see it finished.

With our summer heat, I could probably "finish" it next summer.

Great work on a difficult specimen Al! You bonsai skils really show with the work you've done on this pine.

It appears to have some reverse taper in the photos but that might be just an illusion due to camera angle. With that said it's still a nice tree. Please show it to us again after it gets another years growth. :)

It looks like a Japanese Red Pine.

Good nebari, low branches...it has potential.

As the time comes and repotting to bonsai pot, this is the pot I have chosen for the tree. It comes from Japan and the potter is Ikkoudou.

So far I think this is the best view, but will retain my right to change that in the future as it begins to fill out and branches ramify.

LOVE the bark on that one, Al. I think that's also about the best front for the trunk line and taper from those you've shown.

Thanks, thats basically picture two above rotated just a tad to the right. It is still a bad position as the apex goes away from the viewer. The opposite view, I think no. four above is better but doesn't show the trunk as well.

Looks like you have plenty of branches to choose from to create a new apex if you decide to make this the front, and it shouldn't set your efforts-to-date back much, if at all.

It will be a good tree to photograph in early June looking nice and full.

I like the bark too, but I think, and it's just my opinion, positioning it so it leans slightly towards the right would make it a more unique and interesting tree.

Excellent pot.

Al, great work on a great piece of material. It will be show worthy before you know it with the work you do.
