Sapling
We were clearing part of our property and we came across what I at first thought was a dead cypress. After cutting the downed top off with a chainsaw we noticed that it was still alive. It has one upright branch which is also alive based on green wood after cutting a secondary branch.
It was cold and rainy that day so I appoligize for not raking back some of the straw to get a better look. But from what I saw, it almost looks completely detached from the stump which you can see in the bottom right of one of the pictures. The live vein must be on the bottom. Given that there are bald cypresses all around it I'm guess that this too is a bald cypress and not a pond cypress.
There is another upright cypress in the area I have a 5-year plan for starting with a chop this spring. Since I'm there anyway, would you do anything with this tree? I can start in the ground as it is now and work on it for up to 5 years, I can remove it in February or I can let the chainsaw have it. What would you do?
