I have an elm I will thread graft. can the shoot used for it also merge with the tree's cambium layer with the end going in?

thanks.

2 things.

Xylem and Phloem have pre-defined flow. They have been known to reverse on some species but not all and not sure if it can cause problems down the road.

If you succeed, you will have a cross branch that is a no-no. True that you can angle the drilled hole so they won't align but still not worth it IMHO.

Fwiw, I did an approach graft on a "throw away" Japanese Maple 2 years ago. 2 winters ago, the graft was "accidentally" seperated with approximately 4 " of branch before the area that was grafted. The branch on both sides of the graft leafed out and grew all last year ( the portion I didn't need has since been removed)...I thought that was pretty cool:p.

I do this all the time and yes if one angles the hole a little bit
you won't have to worry about a bar branch. I also thread graft
branches onto my main branches... But, let me state the obvious,
which is often forgotten when doing it, on a branch drill the holes
horizontal, so you don't have a new branch going down... Unless
of course this is the intention...

One more thing, be careful of the whip you use, that it doesn't
have much taper or one of your new branches will end up looking
pretty funny as it goes away from the trunk it gets bigger...
:)

How does one angle the hole a little bit and make sure its horizontal at the same time?
