This one was collected from a woodland swamp in late winter this year. It has a great base and sub trunk suited to a mother and daughter style. I also like the hollow. Here's how it looked after collection.

Here it is now. The secondary trunk and new leader grew well over the year. The secondary trunk was chopped. I'm also growing low sacrifice branches to remove some inverse taper. The leader will be left to thicken and heal the chop for at least another year.

Here's a rough plan of how I see it looking eventually.

Here's another that was collected August last year while still in leaf, submerged in water for a couple of weeks and wintered in my shed. Here's how it looked in the spring.

I then chopped it and grew a new leader, which has shot up to almost 2m over the growing season and started to heal over the chop nicely. I'll still leave it another year at least before reducing again. Here it is now.

And here's my rough plan. Should be a nice powerful tree hopefully.

Finally, I collected this one 3 years ago. It was terrible material really and I wouldn't have bothered with it if I'd found it now. It's a sucker and so was growing off a root of another tree. Somehow it survived collection. After collection I cut some windows into the bark at the root base to encourage more roots, which worked well. A decent nebari is now developing. The roots of Elm grow like crazy. Here it is still in the ground.

To begin with I had it in a pot that was far too small for developing the structure. I then moved it to a larger pot and it grew a leader with 4 1m long branches. The leader is now thickening well, but will need to grow at least another year. Here it is now.

I don't have much of a plan for this one yet. I think that the lowest branch will be removed. Still a long way off completion.

Cool, lovely little side projects. I’d like a few of them, it’s relaxing to work on something that you may not be so heavily invested in.

Knew I’d seen your name around, just see it on reddit. Tony Tickle posting something for you, saw your reply.
Nice to see the same people on different outlets for Bonsai :).
On reddit I’m: AnEnglishUsername
(Don’t ask). In case you see me pop up :)

These aren't so much side projects as my main projects. I don't invest financially in bonsai. Almost all my trees I collect locally. I've only started a few years ago so I don't have anything refined yet. I don't post this kind of thing on Reddit for that reason. I feel like most of the people there want to see something that looks finished whereas here most people are interested in the process.

I can agree with that. People on there maybe not interested enough in bonsai to appreciate the time and effort that goes in to it.

These progressions teach so much. Wish I could save posts like these for study.

Thanks. Create a bookmark? There are some great progressions here.
I usually print them into pdfs, but would be nice to be able to favourite them within the website. I guess I can always look them up in my comment history.

Have you noticed the "watch" button on top? And in the menu, the section "watched"?

Here are views of the full trees to show how much length you need to get the desired thickness. They'll get longer before I cut them.

Excellent examples of growth to thicken that leader. I have a tree that needs this level of top growth for a leader. I have a good healthy next-choice leader to work with...I see I just need to let it grow a couple seasons probably.

I've now chopped a couple of these trees so thought I'd give an update. The leader on this one was grown out for 2 seasons. I wanted to grow it out more but it kept getting blown over and drying out the soil very quickly. Before going on holiday for a week I decided to chop it to reduce the chance of problems while I was away (I have an automated watering system and no-one to check on trees). I've also performed a thread graft on this tree just below the main chop point. Branches will be wired in early Spring.

This one was chopped as well and sacrifice branches removed that were used to create better taper in the trunk. The process of creating the new apex has started as well as developing the secondary trunk.

This one didn't thicken a great deal over the growing season. I discovered that this was because it had become root bound after just 1.5 growing seasons and a lot of the soil wasn't getting wet after watering. It started dropping leaves so I repotted it and removed a huge wreath of circling roots. Hopefully it can be chopped next year. I'd like the chop to heal over more. The new leader has developed good taper due to having multiple extensions. I think it could be a good idea in future to cut a new leader back early to develop multiple branches instead of just one before letting them all extend.

That’s a lot of root growth. Healthy tree!
I imagine that some of my trees that have been in growing boxes for 2-3 seasons have a similar root growth.

It is good you have a pretty clear vision of where you are headed. I don't quit often.
Your first tree is a killer.

An update on these as they've recently all gone into something resembling bonsai pots. The main structure is complete. They just need to ramify and fill out. You can see a video of these trees with most of my others here.

The pot was made by myself. See here for details. The thread-grafted branch has no secondary branches near the trunk, which will need fixing somehow.

Temporary plastic pot.

Temporary terracotta dish with holes drilled in the bottom.
