This one was collected from a woodland swamp in late winter this year. It has a great base and sub trunk suited to a mother and daughter style. I also like the hollow. Here's how it looked after collection.
Here it is now. The secondary trunk and new leader grew well over the year. The secondary trunk was chopped. I'm also growing low sacrifice branches to remove some inverse taper. The leader will be left to thicken and heal the chop for at least another year.
Here's a rough plan of how I see it looking eventually.
Here's another that was collected August last year while still in leaf, submerged in water for a couple of weeks and wintered in my shed. Here's how it looked in the spring.
I then chopped it and grew a new leader, which has shot up to almost 2m over the growing season and started to heal over the chop nicely. I'll still leave it another year at least before reducing again. Here it is now.
And here's my rough plan. Should be a nice powerful tree hopefully.
Finally, I collected this one 3 years ago. It was terrible material really and I wouldn't have bothered with it if I'd found it now. It's a sucker and so was growing off a root of another tree. Somehow it survived collection. After collection I cut some windows into the bark at the root base to encourage more roots, which worked well. A decent nebari is now developing. The roots of Elm grow like crazy. Here it is still in the ground.
To begin with I had it in a pot that was far too small for developing the structure. I then moved it to a larger pot and it grew a leader with 4 1m long branches. The leader is now thickening well, but will need to grow at least another year. Here it is now.
I don't have much of a plan for this one yet. I think that the lowest branch will be removed. Still a long way off completion.
