Had some time to go tree-browsing today and off a tip from @FreeFlyer , I decided to visit Timberwinds Nursery in Saint Louis. I had heard that their service was excellent and that their selection was great, but I was blown away. Soon after I began browsing the bonsai section, I was greeted by MJ, who's their bonsai guy. Not only was he knowledgeable and helpful, he also showed me all around the nursery. He even let me browse his sold section which actually contains a lot of his own project trees.
From there, I purchased a jaqueline hillier elm, a nice little hemlock, and a fine quality japanese pot - all for a verrrryyy reasonable price.
I cannot commend this place highly enough. MJ is in contact with serious bonsai professionals and is attempting to bridge the gap between low cost starter trees and expensive specimens by providing a large selection of pre bonsai. If you are in the area, you HAVE to check this place out - you will not be disappointed.
