Tiny holes in jin

Found these tiny holes in the jin on my Pondarosa pine. I don’t recall seeing them before. They almost look like they’re in a pattern. I’ve searched different site and Google and came up with nothing. Any ideas?

I think those are just dimples where the needles used to be.

Thank you, I think you’re right. After I posted this it dawned on me to look at the pictures of when I received it. It looks as if they were there at that time.
