First there was a little bump that looked like a bud.

Then it was gone with a patch out like I knocked it off, but I never touch this thing, and the bump never really turned into a bud.

Left this for the weekend and today I see this here almost near ringbarking!

I have pill bugs in there....rolly pollys!
This has had scale but haven't seen it for a good couple weeks.

Indoor VC?

Agree, that is a mouse or shrew with a non-common name of "lemon beavers". Might as well try and ground layer with some hormone?

And if they like lemon bark, they'll love peanut butter on a mouse trap.

I don't think that pill bugs did that type of damage. They lack the mouth parts to pierce the bark and eat decaying matter. The lines on the injury are also very straight, almost knife-like. I would suspect something with teeth did this, squirrel or mouse.
I agree with the mouse theory. It is also raised a little off the ground so can't be anything too large.

I never would have guessed pillbugs... I have pullbugs by the billions and I have never seen damage like on your tree. Put some organic fert on that tree - the pillbugs should prefer the organic fert.

Mine have recently exploded in population.

I surely have mice.

But I also have kids...and Cheetos and shit all over...that makes a much easier, better meal than a lemon trunk.

Lotta effort to go toward the smell of a predator for a shitty meal.

Maybe he's just daring!
Daring sourpussass...
