My dawn redwood starter from new world bonsai is exploding with growth (it's trunk is about 9 inches tall and a little less than half an inch in diameter). But I'm wondering, for the new leader,it sits at a slight angle currentlyoff the top of the trunk. Theres about a half inch of dead trunk (from dieback from the chop before it was sent to me).

1. should I even be considering any branches as new leaders if the trunk and nebari are not ready?

2. if I should, does that mean I need to cut the dead growth back and wire the new leader straight or somehow wire/raffia the new leader to the dead trunk?
