My question is “Is it too early for collecting trees?” I live in western NC and will be collecting in elevations upward of 4000’. And just so you know, yes I have my permits. Obviously, I want to collect ASAP, because I am super excited and because when spring hits I’ll be re-potting a lot of my trees, so earlier the better on collecting. I do have protection for new collected/re-potted trees so that’s not an issue. Thanks guys and girls. And happy new year

I prefer to collect either as trees go dormant, or when they are about to pop buds. I would not go out now mid-winter.

FWIW, commercial tree growers in Oregon can begin digging trees in November and often continue through the winter. The trees go into cold storage to keep them dormant until it's time to ship them. When I lived in a cold zone 4 climate, I would often go out in February or March (whenever we had a spring thaw) and lift my ground growing trees.....to root prune them. Just my 2 cents.
