I have 2 trees, and would like more. I really want to go to Home Depot and buy a juniper and hack it up.

So, is it ok to do a major prune this time of year? And repotting? I have no problem leaving it in the gallon container it comes in until it's a good time to repot.

Any advice would be appreciated

Brian

I kept all my pre bonsai material in the nursery pot for a whole year before repotting them. They grow pretty well in the nursery pot for the first year but then should be repotted the next spring in a training pot or a bigger pot if you want to grow it more. I'm sure everyone will say now is not the right time to do heavy pruning. It may be a waist of time since the tree will be weaker and not make it through the winter, but if you want to take a chance go for it. Get something hardy though like a boxwood or juniper.

propagated the girl too, not sure exact date

Knowing what area of the country you are in would be a big help to us so we can give you the right advice.

Where I am, if I found a good juniper now (I have a couple I got about a month ago), I would keep it alive until spring before repotting and doing any major work on it.

Junipers are tough as nails and can tolerate alot of root and canopy work. I would say, though, that I wouldn't be TOO aggressive removing alot of canopy at this time of year. You've really only got maybe another 6 weeks of growing season left in MA and a long winter ahead (assuming we all don't get a repeat of last years "winter"). Pruning to open things up a bit would be ok...wiring would be ok, too. Unless you can provide a frost free location, like a cold greenhouse, I would not re-pot now. These trees can freeze solid and stay that way all winter, assuming their root system is healthy. You'd be better off waiting until next April or May.
