Hi All!
I live in CT, USA and since I’ve come to start bonsai I’ve been noticing local trees a lot more. I came across a tree that peaked my interest, and I can’t figure out what it is. The Plantnet app says black cherry but it doesn’t look quite right. Could be sweet birch too, but the leaves aren’t quite right so I’m not sure. There aren’t many leaves to look at. Looks like the apt maintenance guys chopped the top off cause it was in the way or something.

Any ideas?EA0E1C5D-D74E-46F2-AD57-DD208EC09687.jpegCC2F967C-B914-41B9-A96A-D25B4C48EF57.jpeg

Smell the crushed leaves and you will know in a heartbeat if its sweet birch.

Looks like it could be a prunus of some sort, I just don't know the US species.

In case you didn't know what @penumbra meant,
when crushed, sweet birch will smell pretty strongly of wintergreen.

When crushed a cherry tree leaf will smell, like nothing in particular, green.
😂 Thanks @Leo in N E Illinois i was a bit concerned about sniffing leaves. I’ll check in a bit when my toddler heads to bed.

thanks for the welcome! I had a bit of a panic with the heat wave partly becauseI hadn’t realized our AC unit was blowing on my prebonsai 😱 got them all moved out of the way though 😅 it’s so hot my 1yo doesn’t want to go outside 😂
